Finding What You Love To Do

In 2005, Steve Jobs’ Commencement address at Stanford University delivered some familiar yet powerful advice:

“You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”- Steve Jobs

So how do we find the things that we love doing? It’s not as simple as taking an online quiz – it can take a lot of deep reflection and soul-searching to find what it is you want to dedicate your time and effort to. Here are few questions and exercises to help bring these ideas to the forefront of your mind.

Ask yourself the following questions:
  1. What subject could I read 100 books about and not get bored?
  2. What could I do for five years straight without getting paid?
  3. What do I most look forward to doing?

Find out from your family and friends what skills and interests they see in you. You’ll be surprised at how much insight they have on you that you’ve never thought of before.

Now write down a list of all of your skills and interests in two separate columns. All answers are valid, so don’t hold back. Are you skilled at whistling and interested in sea shells? Write it down!

Finally, set aside some distraction-free time to write down precisely what you love. You might like to try diffusing Peace™ in a quiet space in your home. To narrow down this answer, try asking yourself “What do I love doing on a daily basis that utilises both my skills and interests and will add significant value to people?”

The power now sits in your hands to act on these thoughts and ideas. Invest in yourself and make it happen!
