Seven Outdoor Activities for Kids

Feeling cooped up? During a long day of school or of playing indoors, anybody can get a little stir crazy. Getting fresh air is a must, but managing a household can drain your creative energy when trying to come up with engaging outdoor activities for you and your little ones! We’ve done some of the thinking for you to come up with this list of 7 frugal, fun, and best of all simple outside activities to help give your brain a break. Family fun doesn’t need to be complicated, and hopefully these activity suggestions will allow you some breathing room, too.

  1. Make a batch of bubbles. Not only is this an easy project, but it also is entertaining enough for both kids and adults. Check out our On Guard Bubbles recipe to get started!
  2. Do a scavenger hunt. Everybody loves a good scavenger hunt, especially when its infused with a little friendly competition.
  3. Play broom hockey. Grab some brooms and hit the concrete for a summertime hockey game. You probably already have the supplies on hand (all you really need are some brooms and a puck), but if you can’t find a puck or need a more toddler-friendly version, just take the lids of two doTERRA supplement bottles and hot glue them together, open side facing inward toward one another. We like to use two doTERRA Lifelong Vitality® Convenience Pack caps
  4. Make some sidewalk paint. Take to the streets with a non-synthetic alternative to standard chalk. It’s the easiest do-it-yourself project ever, requiring only four ingredients and five minutes of your time. Use our recipe for Peppermint & Cedarwood Sidewalk Paint for a cool, soothing aromatic experience.
  5. Go on a treasure hunt. Hide an item like a painted empty supplement bottle or glass jar around the yard. Tuck a few small treats inside and give your little one a paper and pen to draw a map of the yard so they can cross off where they’ve searched.
  6. Paint gratitude rocks. Rocks are a pretty common commodity! Go rock hunting with the kids and, using paint pens or acrylics and a paintbrush, sit out on the sidewalk together painting designs on the rocks. Once the rocks are dried, use a sharpie to write messages of kindness and gratitude. Then, leave them at the doorstep of friends or neighbors!
  7. Race paper airplanes. For little ones, this will be a fun experiment in aerodynamics and physics! For you, this will be entirely entertaining. Just round up some paper, teach the basics of paper airplanes, and let the kids go wild. There’s an endless supply of creative designs, and who knows? Maybe the next Wright brother or sister is playing in your backyard.
Playtime is the best time. Enjoy time with your little ones and get some fresh air together. Create something awesome? Share it with your friends on Instagram and tag us (@doterraca). We want to see what you’re up to!
