For most people, the summertime months are for soaking in the sunshine as you create memories with the people you love. However, sunshine is a prime example of sometimes getting too much of a good thing! No one likes a sunburn, and prolonged, unprotected sun exposure can put your skin at risk for long-term damage and early signs of aging.
That’s why sunscreen is so important, but not all sunscreens are created equal. Luckily, doTERRA has created doTERRA sun, a line of incredible sun care products that are naturally sourced and mineral based so you can enjoy the sun without compromising your wellness.
Chemical sunscreens are designed to absorb UV rays to protect your skin from sunburn. Unfortunately, many chemical sunscreen filters degrade over time when exposed to UV rays and generate free radicals that can absorb into the skin. Many active ingredients in chemical sunscreens also have a negative effect on the environment, particularly our oceans and reefs.
Mineral sunscreens act as a physical barrier, reflecting UV rays for broad-spectrum protection without degrading with sun exposure. Because they sit on top of the skin, they are immediately effective, and are typically free of the harsh chemical ingredients that can impact the environment. All doTERRA sun SPF products are mineral based, naturally sourced, and safe for all skin types as well as our planet!
The most common mineral sunscreen filter is zinc oxide, which comes in different particle sizes: nano and non-nano. Nano particles are small enough to potentially absorb into the body, which is what you don’t want. Non-nano particles are bigger, meaning they can’t be absorbed. That’s why non-nano zinc oxide is the active sunscreen filter used in the entire doTERRA sun line!
With doTERRA sun, you get all of this:
And you get none of this:
When developing the doTERRA sun line, we made sure these products were environmentally conscious. All of the formulas are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free, and reef safe!
Terms like “reef-safe” or “reef-friendly” mean that the sunscreen does not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These are UV-blocking chemicals that can cause coral bleaching. When coral bleaches, it’s still alive, but it’s under severe stress, which leaves it susceptible to disease and death.
doTERRA sun products are certified reef safe, which means you can feel good about what’s going on your skin AND into the environment when you chose doTERRA sun care. This makes them usable in areas of the world that restrict non-reef safe sunscreens and helps keep our underwater ecosystems healthier and happier.
