In ancient Greece and Rome, black pepper was extremely popular and was used as a medium of exchange.
Native to India, the black pepper plant, Piper nigrum, is a climbing vine that can grow up to 10 meters high. The stem of the black pepper plant grows into a plentiful green column as the shoots that grow from the stem produce green, almond-shaped leaves. Growing next to the leaves are clustered flowers and the fruit of the plant—the peppercorns. For black pepper, the tiny, rotund fruit is picked when they are fully grown, shiny, and green. This fruit is then steam-distilled and made into the treasured Black Pepper essential oil.
Black Pepper essential oil blends well with a variety of different oils including Bergamot oil, Clary Sage oil, Frankincense oil, Geranium oil, Lavender oil, Clove Bud oil, Juniper Berry oil, Hawaiian Sandalwood oil, and Cedarwood oil.
