It was once said that if you dreamed of gathering juniper berries in winter, you would prosper. Juniper berries also signified honor or the birth of a boy.
The common juniper, Juniperus communis, is an evergreen conifer tree that can grow up to 10 meters high and can live for as long as 200 years. This tree has grey-brown bark and reddish-brown twigs with green, prickly, needle-like leaves. Uniquely, the tree also produces both male and female flowers. The male flowers are small and yellow and grow near the tip of the twigs whereas the female flowers are green and eventually evolve into the blue fruit of the tree. This berry-like fruit is fleshy and aromatic and is steam distilled to produce Juniper Berry essential oil.
Juniper Berry essential oil blends well with citrus oils and Cypress oil, Cedarwood oil, Hawaiian Sandalwood oil, Lavender oil, Tea Tree oil, Lemongrass oil, Clary Sage oil, and Vetiver oil when diffused.
