Plant Description

Rosa damascena, more commonly known as the Damask rose, is a small shrub plant with thorny stems. Originally from the Syrian capital Damascus, this breed of rose is highly sought after for its many aromatic properties and applications. doTERRA sources our Rose oil from Demask roses from Bulgaria. Harvesting of the delicate bloom of the Rosa damascena typically begins before sunrise. The labor-intensive production process has a very low yield, with one 5 mL bottle of Rose essential oil requiring more than 10,000 fresh petals to produce enough essential oil. Because the petals are so delicate, the distillation process must happen the same day that the flower is harvested. This makes Rose essential oil one of the most prized essential oils that doTERRA offers.
