Known in ancient times as the King of Oils, Frankincense was highly esteemed among ancient civilisations and used in many rituals and meditation practices. The Babylonians and Assyrians would burn Frankincense in religious ceremonies and the ancient Egyptians used Frankincense resin for everything from perfume to soothing skin.
Frankincense promotes feelings of satisfaction, peace, relaxation, and overall wellness, which explains its unique value in ancient times. Just as in its treasured past, Frankincense essential oil is highly valued in the doTERRA community and continues to be one of the most popular essential oils.
How to use Frankincense essential oil
- Combine one to two drops of Frankincense with a teaspoon of Fractionated Coconut Oil and massage into desired are for a soothing effect.
- Add two to four drops into a diffuser of your choice to create a peaceful and meditative space.
- Massage on the bottoms of feet to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance mood.

Frankincense essential oil is sourced from a variety of Boswellia (carterii, frereana and sacra) plants. One Boswellia sacra tree can produce up to 1 kg of resin each year. If Boswellia sacra trees are properly cared for, the tree can product resin for hundreds of years!

DIY Aromatic Room Spray
This easy aromatic room spray is perfect to use around your home and promotes an uplifting and invigorating aroma.
Ingredients
- 10 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 10 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- 20 drops Douglas Fir essential oil
- Water
Instructions
- In glass spray bottle, add essential oils and top off with water.
- To use, shake the bottle, then spray.
DIY Massage Oil
Tired after a long day? Relax and unwind with one of our favourite massage oils. The benefits of foot massage are well known. Relax and restore by incorporating Frankincense into your massage oil and massage on the soles of your feet.
Ingredients
- 30 ml of Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 5 drops Lavender essential oil
- 4 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 4 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil
- 4 drops Wild Orange essential oil
Instructions
- Mix together Fractionated Coconut Oil with essential oils.
- Massage onto hands and feet for a soothing effect.
Where does Frankincense come from?
Frankincense essential oil is produced from the resin of the Boswellia sacra, Bowellia carterii and boswellia frereana plants. The resin of the Boswellia sacra tree is a sap-like substance with a high viscosity. These trees can grow up to 8 meters and are commonly found growing on rocky slopes and southern coastal mountains.
After the resin secretes from the tree, it is then scraped off or collected as it drips onto the ground. When doTERRA obtains the resin from Boswellia trees, the trees are carefully scored or ‘bled’. From there, the resin is delicately distilled and essential oils are extracted.
