Whether you’re single or have a big family, the refrigerator can sometimes become a black hole for produce and leftovers. There’s nothing worse than being on a budget and forgetting about your food, only to see that it’s gone bad when you need it most. Luckily, keeping an organized fridge is one (easy) way you can reduce food waste and make the most of your perishables.

Basic Refrigerator Guidelines

Temperature: In general, keep your fridge at 4.4 degrees Celsius or lower.

Labeling: Label everything—and we mean everything! Keep a roll of painter’s tape and a sharpie handy, and make it a habit of writing dates on everything that goes in the fridge.

Cleanliness: Do a quick sweep of your refrigerator once per week, and deep clean it once per month. To up your refrigerator freshness game, keep a small bowl of baking soda combined with two drops each of doTERRA Purify® and Tea Tree stored at the back of the top or middle shelf.

Top and Middle Shelves

  • Ready-to-eat foods (we’re talking about Sunday night’s leftovers, that salad your mom sent you home with a few nights ago, or the string cheese for the kids)
  • Fresh herbs
  • Nuts

Bottom Shelf

  • Raw meat, poultry, and fish
  • Eggs
  • Dairy products (sour cream, milk, crème fraiche, or almond milk)

Crisper Drawer

  • Fruits and vegetables (keep them separated—pick one drawer for fruits, and another for veggies)

Door Shelves

  • Condiments
  • Juices
  • Filtered water
  • Nut butters
  • Natural oils (safflower, avocado, etc.)

You’re not far from a spotless, organized refrigerator aimed at making the most of the food you buy. Use these tips, tricks, and essential oil refrigerator hacks and watch your cold-box transform in no-time!
