Fun Fact
The word “dill” comes from the Norse word “dilla” meaning “to lull.” This has reference to dill’s soothing benefits.

Plant Description
The dill plant, Anethum graveolens, is an annual that is commonly grown in herb, vegetable, and flower gardens. The plant usually grows anywhere from three to five feet tall. The stems of the plant are stiff and hollow and covered with aromatic, blue-green leaves that are separated into thin, thread-like segments. The flowers of the plant are yellow and grow in flattened, compound umbels.1 doTERRA Dill essential oil is extracted from the seed of the plant.

Chemistry of Dill Oil
Main chemical components: carvone, limonene, α-phellandrene

The main chemical component of Dill essential oil is carvone. Carvone has a monoterpene backbone with a ketone functional group. According to a study recently published by Brazilian neuroscientists, the type of carvone found in dill showed, in an experimental preclinical study, a statistically significant calming effect against a heightened state of excitement.* This finding suggests that Dill essential oil may support healthy nervous system function.2* For more information about the main chemical components found in Dill or other essential oils, visit the doTERRA Science Blog.
