In daily life, we are often influenced by situations that cause us stress. Typically, we use the term stress to describe negative situations; however, stress lives on a spectrum. Mild or moderate stress can create healthy tension, fuel ambition, motivate us, or inspire us. It’s only when we move beyond our comfort zone of healthy stress that we experience distress, which can result in fatigue, exhaustion, and—at its most extreme—burnout.
Our experience of the stress spectrum shifts daily. Each person’s normative area—or “comfort zone”—for stress is varied. Stress only becomes a problem when we experience distress. The good news is there are activities, habits, and steps you can take to manage where you are on this spectrum of stress each day.
In order to maintain healthy cognition, we need to make sure that we’re getting adequate rest and creating environments where we can focus properly.
Rest—whether it is solid eight hours of sleep at night or a few moments of reprise during a busy day—will help us keep our minds operating at optimum levels, maintaining healthy cognition.
