Dos and Don’ts of Sunscreen

The sun is your friend. Its warmth and light are fundamental to the climate and habitability of our planet, and the vitamin D you absorb from the sun helps your body create serotonin, which is important for mental function.

However, sunshine is a classic example of how you can have too much of a good thing. No one likes sunburn, and skin cancer risks should always be taken seriously.

Here are some dos and don’ts for choosing safe, effective sunscreen.

  • Do use mineral sunscreen, which creates a physical barrier to reflect UV rays for broad-spectrum protection. It doesn’t degrade when exposed to UV rays and is immediately effective.
  • Don't purchase leading chemical sunscreen brands, which absorb UV rays, require about 20 minutes to become effective, and potentially increase your toxic load. Certain active ingredients can trigger allergic reactions or raise other concerns.
  • Do look for active ingredients like zinc oxide, which is recognized as generally safe for all skin types.

The good news is all doTERRA sun care products are mineral-based and meet these standards! You can enjoy peace of mind when you purchase and use this product line.

  • Do use sunscreen that’s between SPF 15 and 30. SPF 15 offers approximately 93% protection when used properly, and 30 jumps to 97% protection.
  • Do look for “broad spectrum” on sunscreen labels, which refers to the UV ray types the sunscreen protects against: UVA and UVB.
  • Do use sunscreen with non-nano zinc oxide—the safe, water-resistant, and nonirritating active ingredient in doTERRA sun products. Non-nano zinc oxide isn’t absorbed by the skin.
  • Do regularly apply sunscreen before and during both wet and dry activities. Reapply every two hours—more if you sweat—for dry activities and every 40 to 80 minutes for wet activities.
  • Don't immediately jump in water after applying sunscreen. Wait at least 15 minutes.
  • Do store sun care products in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Create memories and stay active all summer. Your skin loves soaking up as much vitamin D as it can. Stay safe as you do by protecting yourself and your family with doTERRA sun.
