Our Pets Are Stressed

One of my clients recently told me, “I found a remote position so I could be home with my dog more. But his anxious behavior is worse.” Many of you would do anything to accommodate your pets and show them you love them.

The pandemic led to several newly acquired cats and dogs. Adoption rates soared, but the pets didn’t always receive the best opportunities to socialize and gain confidence. Life was clearly different.

It was great for many pets to have their human family home with them. But when children returned to school and adults started going back to work, pets experienced a significant change. Anxious feelings associated with separation can make some pets mopey. Other pets become destructive and vocal, and some even experience negative physical changes.

What can you do to help your pets adjust? Pets are sensitive to your emotions and keenly aware of your nervousness, fears, or worries. Leave the house without a long, dramatic departure and return without a grandiose celebration. Your nonchalant attitude will be helpful for them. You can also leave the radio or television on for comfort as well.

doTERRA Adaptiv®* and Copaiba can cultivate calm environments for your furry friends. These products are safe and effective for cats and dogs of all ages and sizes. Adaptiv Calming Blend features Magnolia, which contains more of the calming chemical constituent linalool than Lavender. The Neroli and Rosemary in Adaptiv are also high in linalool. The potent concentration of β-Caryophyllene (BCP) in Copaiba offers a soothing aroma.

Apply doTERRA Touch® roller bottles topically two to four times daily by rolling the essential oil on your palm and petting your pet on the head, back, belly, or rump. Keep the experience positive—it doesn’t need to be a long period of contact. (More independent cats may only allow one quick swipe along their backs.) You can also diffuse Adaptiv and Copaiba for 20–30 minutes or all day with your doTERRA diffuser.

When you apply and diffuse essential oils for your pets, you benefit as well, so it’s a win-win situation. Remember, always diffuse in a well-ventilated area and ensure your pet can come and go as desired.

Copaiba and Adaptiv are excellent choices to support your pet’s adjustment and acceptance of new or challenging situations. Some pets may respond within a few days, but you should commit to using these essential oils for several weeks for the best results. Your pets will thank you for addressing their stresses.
