Saving Generations through Self-Reliance

Imagine what your life would be like if you couldn’t read or write. You wouldn’t be able to read these words. You’d have no way to understand the signs in your neighborhood or respond to texts from friends and family members. You likely wouldn’t be able to pursue career goals or personal dreams.

Reading and writing are essential, yet so many people go through life without learning these important skills. Silver leaders Chris and Tiffany Garvin knew this issue was affecting people in Nigeria and decided to do something about it. Working with Spell Africa International, they completed a doTERRA Healing Hands Match Program project with the goal of increasing literacy among adults in Lagos.

The Garvins chose this project because “few things impact a person’s life and future like being able to read and write. . . . Learning to read and write opens up the whole world.”

Through their fundraising efforts, the Garvins raised $1,498.60, which then was matched by the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation^® for a total donation of $2,997.20. With this donation, Spell Africa provided 30 scholarships to help adults learn to read and write.

One of the people impacted was Hadizat Muhammed. Because of civil unrest, Hadizat and her family were forced to migrate to Lagos in search of a better life. Hadizat never had the opportunity to receive even a basic education as a child and, as a result, couldn’t find employment.

Since receiving her scholarship and starting the literacy program through Spell Africa, Hadizat has learned to read two- to five-letter words. This development has given her the confidence to start her own business, providing an income for her and her three children.

Hadizat’s life has changed for the better, and so will her children’s and on for potentially countless generations. Hadizat dream is to one day become a university graduate and a professor, helping others pursue education and greater opportunity.
