Research shows the time you spend sleeping is crucial to brain function, emotional well-being, and other vital health areas.

The doTERRA Serenity Sleep System has been proven both safe for and effective at supporting sleep. Participants in the trial also saw several other benefits, such as:

  • Improved sleep and refreshing awakenings
  • Improved quality of life
  • Increased day-to-day capability
  • Increased activity
  • Decreased inflammatory markers

The doTERRA Serenity Sleep System—featuring doTERRA Serenity Restful Blend, doTERRA Serenity Stick + Valerian, and doTERRA Serenity Restful Complex Softels—was developed to naturally support healthy sleep patterns aromatically, topically, and internally.*

All three Sleep System products contain Lavender—known for its restful aroma and ability to create a sleep-supportive environment. The softgels were recently reformulated to include tart cherry extract, a natural source of melatonin, and the stick delivers the calming aroma of valerian root extract.

The Study

Each study participant wore a fitness tracker that collected participants’ sleep times and amounts of light sleep, REM sleep, and deep sleep, providing a “sleep score.” Researchers also collected blood samples before and after the study to analyze a baseline and an endpoint for genome-wide methylation patterns.

Participants were divided into two categories: regular sleepers and irregular sleepers. Regular sleepers were defined as participants whose bedtimes and waketimes varied two hours or fewer and who went to bed before midnight. Irregular sleepers were defined as participants whose bedtimes and waketimes varied by more than two hours and who went to bed after midnight.

The doTERRA Serenity Sleep System study provided the following information:

  • Changes in patient methylation status over the course of the study suggests certain gene expression is being dialed up (hypomethylation) or dialed down (hypermethylation).
  • 94 genes were found to have changed to a statistically significant degree.
  • Both regular and irregular sleepers saw an increase in CD4 T memory cells, but regular sleepers experienced stronger results, suggesting the doTERRA Serenity Sleep System is most powerful when combined with healthy sleep habits.

The doTERRA Serenity Sleep System demonstrated potential in supporting

  • Sleep quality
  • Improved perception of sleep and functional outcomes of sleep
  • Modulated biological mechanisms through epigenetic modification
  • Positive impact on biological age

The doTERRA Serenity Sleep System and Biological Age

The doTERRA Serenity Sleep System impacted markers of biological age, according to several body system clocks. Unlike chronological age (the number of years you’ve been alive), biological age is modifiable. While you can’t change how old you are, you may be able to slow the signs of aging.

The study noted:

  • A significant decrease in blood age markers in regular sleepers—by 1.84 years. This wasn’t seen in irregular sleepers.
  • A significant decrease in brain age markers in regular sleepers—by 7.05. This was also seen in irregular sleepers by 5.74 years.
  • A significant decrease in inflammatory markers in regular sleepers—by 3 years. This was also seen in irregular sleepers by 2.37 years.
  • A significant decrease in immune age markers in regular sleepers by 3.86 years. This was not seen in irregular sleepers.
  • A significant decrease in metabolic age markers in regular sleepers by 4.45 years. This was also seen in irregular sleepers by 3.48 years.
