Amyris Essential Oil

Often referred to as West Indian sandalwood, the Amyris plant is a botanical treasure, hailing primarily from the lush, tropical climates of Haiti and Central America. Historically, amyris has been esteemed for its rich, balsamic fragrance. It was commonly used as torchwood because of its high oil content and natural luminosity when burned, earning it the nickname “candlewood.” Amyris was also used for furniture and flooring, its durable wood being a popular carpentry choice.

Today, the amyris plant is celebrated for its essential oil, which is steam-distilled from wood chips and bark. This process harnesses the plant’s aromatic and beneficial properties, resulting in an essential oil that’s cherished in the world of aromatherapy and perfumery. Amyris oil is known for its warm, woody, and slightly sweet aroma, making it a favored ingredient in high-end perfumes and cosmetics.

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli is a bushy herb from the mint family with stems reaching two to three feet in height and bearing small pink-white flowers. Known for its rich and musky sweet fragrance, patchouli oil is regularly used in the perfume industry and in scented products like laundry detergents and air fresheners.

Patchouli essential oil comes from the leaf. Fresh leaves are air-dried for several days before distillation. When dried, they shrink to a third of their original weight. After drying, the leaves are distilled for at least eight hours.

Patchouli oil is beneficial to the skin in a myriad of ways. Patchouli essential oil is often used topically to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, blemishes, and minor skin imperfections. It can also promote a smooth, glowing complexion.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense has been a highly valued commodity for millennia, dating back to ancient civilizations like Babylon and Assyria. The precious resin is the oldest global supply chain. Babylonians and Assyrians would burn it in religious ceremonies and for contemplative meditation. The ancient Egyptians used it in perfumes and soothing skin salves. Oil from the resin has long been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese wellness practices.

Frankincense essential oil comes from the resin of the frankincense tree. Harvesters make shallow cuts in the bark, from which resin seeps out. The resin is left for two weeks to crystallize, then it’s scraped off the tree. This process repeats over multiple weeks throughout the harvesting season. Resin tears are carefully cleaned and organized by size and color by harvesters before distillation.

Lime Essential Oil

Lime essential oil is cold-pressed from the rinds of Key lime fruits and is sourced in Brazil. The Key lime is a hybrid citrus that can be successfully grown in most areas where there’s no winter frost. While all varieties of lime share similar properties, Key limes are highly desired for their strong, robust flavor and zesty fragrance, which stem from a higher acidity compared to other limes.

Lime essential oil is refreshing and energizing in both aroma and taste. The citrusy aroma can be diffused to help freshen the air. It’s also an effective natural surface cleaner.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang oil is derived from the star-shaped flowers of the tropical ylang ylang tree. Like jasmine, ylang ylang has been used for centuries in religious and wedding ceremonies.

Ylang Ylang oil creates a calm, positive atmosphere. It’s frequently used in luxurious personal care products for its enchanting aroma and nourishing properties.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Nicknamed the “plant’s physician” for its positive effects on nearby flora, Roman chamomile oil is a common ingredient in teas, face creams, hair dyes, shampoos, and perfumes. Ancient Romans used it to promote courage during war.

The flowers of Roman chamomile resemble daisies with a prominent yellow center, white petals, and gray-green leaves. Some say that the flowers smell like apples. The plant grows close to the ground, only reaching about a foot in height. Roman Chamomile essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers, which should be harvested for distillation shortly after blooming.

Roman chamomile can be difficult to cultivate because of its sensitivity to fluctuations in weather conditions. The high and regular amount of rainfall per year in the Pacific Northwest—along with a relatively consistent climate—make this area successful at growing Roman chamomile.
