Today, we're excited to talk to Beth Ford about how you can reduce your toxic load. Beth, thank you so much for being here with us today.
Beth Ford: Thank you for having me.
doTERRA: This is a topic that I love to talk about, and I know a lot of people in doTERRA are really passionate about it. Now my first question for you is what do we mean when we talk about toxins?
Beth: That's a good question. When I think about toxins, I think about anything that we are putting in or around our bodies that are going to be disruptive to our health and well-being, both physically, mentally, emotionally.
doTERRA: Absolutely. I love that. And that's just a nice round picture. What are some of the biggest ways that I might be exposed to toxins every day?
Beth: Yeah. So unfortunately, even if we live in the cleanest, most organic environment, there's going to be exposure to toxins, right? So the air we breathe and the products we choose to use in our home, the food that we eat, our water that we drink, or other liquids that we intake, really, they're everywhere.
Processed foods, especially, and things that we use to take care of our little ones too often have really scary things hiding in them that can wreak havoc on their bodies and our bodies. And over time, the exposure to those can really add up and be problematic.
doTERRA: Absolutely. Now you mentioned that one of the sources might be products that we're bringing into our home or using with our families. How can I reduce those toxins around my home?
Beth: So we like to call this a Ditch and Switch. So identifying these products first is really important, and there are some key areas that you can start looking for. Maybe some of these products that you thought were clean or you thought were cleaning your home or your space that are actually introducing more dangerous things than what they're removing, right?
So looking in your cleaning supplies, looking at your laundry detergent and your laundry supplies. Our laundry room actually has more toxins than like our bathroom cleaners, oftentimes, which is crazy if you think about that, right? We're rolling our clothes around in these chemicals that we think are cleaning them. And really, we're just adding more that really needs to be removed to our clothes.
And you can look at like air fresheners and things that we typically would use to make our homes smell nice. If they are synthetic fragrances, that can be really detrimental to our respiratory health and our overall immune health.
So, yeah, those are kind of some key places—when I first started ditching for cleaner products, those were kind of the key areas that I started with that I really feel like made a significant impact on my family's well-being.
doTERRA: And you mentioned another place that we might be running into a lot of these toxins are things that we're putting in our body, things that we're ingesting. What changes can I make to reduce toxins in my diet?
Beth: Yeah!
Grocery Store Tips
So a couple of ways someone taught me early on that at the grocery store, if we avoid the middle aisles and we stay mostly on the outer ring of the grocery store, that's where you're going to find more of your whole foods and your produce and things that are coming straight from the source versus things that come in packages and boxes.
And I kind of was like, wow, that's really true if you think about the setup of a grocery store. That's a simple way actually is to like, observe, where do you spend the most time picking your groceries out? Are you in the middle sections with the processed foods? Or do you spend more time bringing whole foods and things that are—maybe they're organic? Or maybe you source them from a farmer's market?
And even those things, the fresh fruits and vegetables we bring in, you can even take it a step further and you should wash all of those things. And you can use, you know, things like Lemon oil or On Guard Cleaner Concentrate to make sure that your foods are as clean as they can be after bringing them home from the market or the grocery store.
Supplementation
And then incorporating things like supplements and like our Lifelong Vitality. And I love the kids vitamins for my kiddos. I know that they are filling in those nutritional gaps where, you know, our food doesn't quite meet the standards that we would want them to.
And we love all of the Greens and the Protein shakes. Those are great ways to add clean, nutrient-dense things to your menu—in your family's menu.
doTERRA: I love that, and I love how simple it can be. It doesn't have to be something super complicated.
Beth: Yes, especially if you have a family. If you have little ones, simple is the best. It's the very best.
doTERRA: Now you mentioned a few different doTERRA products in diet. What are some other ways I can use doTERRA products to reduce my toxic load?
Beth: Yeah, so I mentioned before fragrances are, you know, we all love to smell good and love to have things that smell good in our homes. So really simple swaps like choosing diffusers with your favorite oils over candles or air fresheners. Personal fragrance as well.
So men and women really like love the whole ritual of perfume and cologne and body sprays. Your essential oils are perfect for that. Balance is one of my go-to for just daily aromas and everyone's always like, “You smell so nice.”
So really, just making that—simple shifts, really simple steps. It doesn't have to be overwhelming to start making an impact. And then going a little bit deeper, especially if you have really great self-care routines already taking a look and seeing what's in those products. What are you caring for your body with that could be cleaner?
And I bet doTERRA has a replacement for that. So skincare or lotions, things like that that we love to use. Making the shift to a cleaner product with doTERRA Spa line and skin care is a really awesome choice.
doTERRA: I love all of that. And like you said, it's those simple little switches and looking at what you already do and finding a way to just make it a little bit cleaner.
Beth: Yeah!
doTERRA: Well, Beth, it has been incredible to talk to you today to learn a little bit more about what we can do every day to reduce our toxic load.
Beth: Yeah, it's something I feel really passionately about, and it's really where I started with my journey to a more natural lifestyle. And I love—it's my favorite thing that I get to help people do, too is just open them to the possibilities of making their own bodies and their families and their homes this clean, peaceful space just through some really, really simple shifts.
