Brooke, thank you so much for joining us today.
Brooke Magleby: Oh, it's my pleasure!
doTERRA: I am very excited to talk about this topic because I think it's one that people don't know a lot about. So my first question for you is how did the AromaTouch Technique come about and what is it exactly?
Brooke: Oh, thank you for asking that question. I think you're right. We have quite a few of our wonderful customers that are not familiar with the AromaTouch Technique. And I am so excited that that is soon going to change.
So Dr. David Hill, one of our founding executives of doTERRA, actually, when doTERRA started, he was having some of his own health challenges, and there were some things that he knew that he needed. And so he started designing and developing this technique, not necessarily specifically just for doTERRA, but for multiple reasons. And he worked on it for over a year and a half, refining it and perfecting and simplifying it and trying to still make it just as powerful in its simplicity.
And then as it came about, he got to where he finally started testing it out on people, and it was having amazing results. And so it is a specific clinical application of essential oils on the back and the feet. And then there's also a hand technique that is also separate that can be done really easily and simply for anyone and everyone. And so it's a wonderful experience for people.
doTERRA: And that sounds amazing. Like you said, so much work and effort and research went into this. It's incredible.
Brooke: Oh, absolutely. It wasn't just coming up with which essential oils to use, but there was a lot of science and research. And he used you know, he drew on years and years of his own personal experience in the medical field, as well as his understanding and knowledge of natural medicine and how he could bring those two together, along with other modalities, into one beautiful clinical application is truly remarkable.
doTERRA: Absolutely. Now, Brooke, what is your specific knowledge and experience with the AromaTouch Technique?
Brooke: I was really fortunate to go to one of Dr. Hill's first trainings for the AromaTouch Technique. I think it was maybe his second or third one that he had done, and it was such a transformative experience for me. I knew that it would be something I would utilize for my family, for my friends, for my team members, for my customers.
And then I was honored to be asked to be one of the to be one of the first trainers when the training program came out. So for the last ten years, I've had the chance to train thousands of people across the country and in Japan and other places how to do and perform the technique for their family members, for their team members, neighbors, and so forth. I have used it within my own home a lot. So it's been a real honor for me to share.
And probably one of my favorite parts of sharing the AromaTouch Technique is walking—watching people walk in for a training and seeing their countenance, seeing how they are feeling, and then watching as they walk out. They're completely different people. It's really remarkable, but it is so rewarding to see such a wonderful, positive change, both physically and emotionally as people come to these trainings and learn the technique.
doTERRA: I love that! And what are the specific oils that are used during the AromaTouch Technique?
Brooke: You know, Dr. Hill gathered all of the oils that we had at the time, you know, for doTERRA, and he said, “You know, there's many oils that I could have chosen.” And he worked for a very long time to try and figure out which ones would be best. Because it was very important to him that the aromatic profile that, you know, after you got done receiving the technique would be a pleasant experience, right? We wanted it to be beneficial, both aromatically and topically.
And, you know, doTERRA On Guard® might be very supportive to the body in many, many ways. But nobody likes to walk away smelling like a pizza, right? So there was a lot of research and actually a lot of science that went into ensuring that the oils, as they were blended that the constituents, again, remained intact, and that it did create an aromatic profile that was very pleasant. So the oils we have used literally now since 2009 have never changed.
And they don't need to change, even with the introduction of many other essential oils that we've gained over the last ten years. He's gone back and he's reviewed it and he's like, “No, this is literally the only oils that need to be used.”
Oils in the Technique
So we use doTERRA Balance® and Lavender. Those two really set the stage, right? And then we use Tea Tree and On Guard, and then we have the AromaTouch® blend and Deep Blue®. And then we have Wild Orange and Peppermint. I always call Wild Orange and Peppermint kind of that yin and yang. I think that that's a wonderful way to end the technique, right?
doTERRA: Absolutely. Now, a key foundation of the AromaTouch Technique is combining touch with essential oils. Why is that so powerful?
Brooke: Well, the nice thing about the AromaTouch Technique, it is not a massage. I like to make that really clear with people, because sometimes when we think we're going to get a massage, we have an expectation that we're going to be manipulating tissue. And that is not what we do with the AromaTouch Technique.
So think of it this way. If you go outside and a fly or a gnat or a mosquito lands on your arm, even before you see it, you can feel it, right? Because our skin is very sensitive. We have lots and lots of nerve endings on our skin.
So when we gently even just stroke the skin, there is a neurological response that happens. And so when we combine that power of touch with the power of the essential oils, we can actually enhance the experience for someone significantly. And we can also affect the autonomic nervous system in a way that is positive, right?
doTERRA: Yes, absolutely. And like you said, you saw these great transformations when you perform the AromaTouch Technique on people. Can you tell us maybe a story?
Brooke: Oh, I'd love to! Probably one of my favorite experiences. Well, like I said, I've had thousands of them. But one of my favorite experiences in a training was a mother and two of her daughters came. And it was a really beautiful thing to watch each of them serve each other by—as they were learning the technique. And then they were rotating to give the technique and receive the technique.
And then one of the daughters, after she received the technique, she kind of was really emotional. And I kind of walked over and asked how she was doing, and she said, “You know, I've not always had the best relationship with my mom, but having her give me this AromaTouch Technique truly has helped kind of heal my heart a little bit, you know, and just there's a connection here that wasn't there before.”
And that really kind of surprised me, honestly, because I didn't expect that response. I mean, we know that the AromaTouch Technique can do many things, but that was a unique experience for me to watch how it actually created a special bond in their relationship that needed to be helped.
And so that was a beautiful experience for me. And I know personally I've used it in my own home to connect with my children and to help them with their needs and to have a tool at my disposal that can help me do that for my children makes me feel like an empowered mother. And so I'm grateful for that.
doTERRA: That is so incredible. Now, Brooke, you mentioned that you've done, you know, thousands of AromaTouch Techniques on people. What are your favorite oils to pair with the AromaTouch blend and use when you do the technique?
Brooke: Well, we don't use any other oils except for just those eight. When we do the AromaTouch Technique on the back and the feet, we just stick with those eight essential oils all the time, every time. I've never changed or adjusted or switched or added any other essential oils.
AromaTouch Hand Technique
But when we do the hand technique, because it is separate from the actual full AromaTouch Technique, the hand technique allows me to make a connection with someone, and I will use any essential oil when I'm doing the hand technique with someone.
And typically I will choose something like doTERRA Serenity® or Citrus Bliss® or Balance®, Adaptiv®, right? Any of those, Copaiba. Any of those would be fantastic oils to use for the hand technique exclusively.
No Additional Oils Needed
But we would never add any of those essential oils when we're doing the full AromaTouch Technique on the back and the feet, we would just stick to those eight essential oils. And there's two reasons for that.
Number one, the aromatic profile and the physical benefits that are received from those eight oils specifically. There's purpose in that. And that was there was a lot of science and research that went into that.
But also there is an aromatic profile that occurs at the very end when you finish with the AromaTouch Technique, there is an aroma that is created that cannot not be duplicated. Trust me, I've tried. I've tried to take one drop of each of those eight essential oils and put them in a bottle and tried to create that aromatic profile. And it's impossible to do unless you're actually doing the technique. It's a remarkable experience. I've never had anything like that happen to me before, but it is remarkable.
But when we're doing the hand technique, you know, another reason why we would choose an oil like Balance or Serenity or any of the emotional blends that we have to offer, you know, doTERRA Cheer®, any of those is because if I put Peppermint on someone's hand, what do they do? You know, they will accidentally touch their face or their eye or someplace that might cause some discomfort. So when I when I do the hand technique on someone, I'm always choosing an oil that I know would be safe if they accidentally touched themselves someplace that—or something that could be uncomfortable.
doTERRA: Absolutely. Brooke, if people are wanting to learn more about the AromaTouch Technique, where can they go? What resources do we have?
Brooke: Oh, there are some amazing resources and more coming, which I am so excited about. I'm not sure when people will listen to this. I mean, we're recording this at the beginning of 2022, but the AromaTouch program, you know, we've done the in-person trainings now for over ten years. They have been phenomenal. And those who have gone to those trainings will attest to that. But as things changed over the last couple of years, those in-person trainings had to be shut down.
Online AromaTouch Technique Certification
And so the need for the AromaTouch Technique has grown tenfold. And so we went back to the drawing board and with the help of Dr. Hill's assistant Jordan and others, we've put together an online training for the AromaTouch Technique, which actually is going to be launched in March of 2022.
And so people will have an opportunity now to learn directly from Dr. Hill, which I think is also an added bonus of the online training program is they get to learn from the master himself. And they'll get to learn a lot of the details of the AromaTouch Technique and be able to purchase it along with a new, updated, beautiful kit that is going to just blow people's minds.
AromaTouch Technique in the Home
And they'll get to learn it from home, which I think is powerful because I had individuals at my trainings as young as 13 and as old as 86. Anyone can do this technique. So learning as a family, learning it with your children or your spouse or your significant other or friends or whatever, I think is powerful because as much as I love to give it, which is incredibly beneficial for me to give, I don't have a lot of people around me that know how to do the technique, right?
So if my spouse or someone, you know, knew how to do that, that would really add to the benefit because then people are being able to give and receive more frequently, which I know from my parents, my dad, bless him, he's 76 years old. He gives my mom an AromaTouch Technique every week. She went through some really traumatic events in her life, and it has been a powerful way for him to serve her. And I am so grateful for that. So anybody can learn it in any way. So it's kind of exciting because you'll also be able to review once you have access to that training and you have the kit, you'll be able to review it and become masterful at it.
In-Person Workshops
And then we're also going to have some in-person workshops that will start probably the middle to the end of this year that will—they will be shorter workshops, they won't be a full training, but more of a workshop for hands on. So we can help people because some people like to learn online, but some people learn better, you know, hands on. And so we're going to give people opportunities to do that.
Sharing the AromaTouch Technique
And I'm so excited that AromaTouch—when we did the numbers, when we crunched the numbers, we realized that even with all of the efforts of our trainers over the last ten years, which they have worked so, so hard, doing those eight-hour plus trainings was exhausting. There was a lot of work that went into every single one of those trainings, logistically and everything else.
And so knowing that people will be able to now learn this at home is powerful, but we also recognize that 98% of our customer base is not familiar with the AromaTouch Technique. And that desperately needs to change because after what I have seen and experienced over the last ten years, I can't think of anything better for people to learn and to do and to receive. I can't think of anything better.
doTERRA: I think you are absolutely right, and it's such an amazing opportunity for people to have access to this training, like you said, straight from Dr. Hill, straight from the horse's mouth, as you will.
Brooke: Yes.
doTERRA: And make sure that they are feeling confident, and they can review, and they can practice and make sure that this technique is used more and more often and able to bless more and more lives.
Brooke: Absolutely. Absolutely.
doTERRA: Brooke, thank you so much for being here with us today, for teaching us about not only the origin, but the benefits of the AromaTouch Technique.
Brooke: Thank you for inviting me! I'm super excited for people to learn this technique and to use it in their homes.
