Today we are revisiting a conversation we had with Leland Jones about the importance of supplementation in your diet to ensure your body is getting what it needs. Plus, we’ll also sit down with Dr. Osguthorpe, Chief Medical Officer, to talk about your healthspan and how what your give your body plays such an important role.

Leland, thank you so much for joining us today to talk about this super important subject.

Leland Jones: Yeah. Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

doTERRA: Of course. So, supplements are something that I think a lot of people are skeptical toward. So why does our body need supplements or does our body need supplements in addition to the food that we already eat?

Leland: No, that's good. And I can see why a lot of people are feeling that way. And to be honest, I felt that way myself.

The Importance of Supplements

So, before doTERRA, I had a different career. And so, what I did is I went to like one of those big stores that you can buy things in bulk. And I actually brought the supplements, and I put them on my desk because I felt like if I had them on my desk, I could remind myself to take them more often. And I had a co-worker who would show me articles about the pros and cons of these different supplements. And so, some things that I learned was one, our soils that we're currently using to grow our crops are not nutrient dense like they used to be.

And the other thing is we're supposed to be eating—like, we're supposed to be eating healthier than we are. I'm sure that's no shock to anyone. It's like, your plate of food for dinner is supposed to be like a rainbow of colors of different vegetables. And unfortunately, that is not the way we are eating as much as we should.

So yeah, we need to be taking supplements: one, because people like me aren't eating as healthy. And two, the food doesn't have the nutrients that it once did. And then the other aspect is we need those supplements to replenish our body, to fill in the gaps of all the things we are missing. So yeah, I would say it's very much important.

doTERRA: And that is so interesting, and you're definitely not alone. I know for myself; my plate never looks like a rainbow. So there definitely are gaps that I'm sure most people have that need to be filled. So, you mentioned other supplements that you were taking before you were introduced to doTERRA. Are all supplements created equal?

Leland: Not at all. And I was actually really—I don't know if the word is shocked—but I was really discouraged when I learned that all these supplements, like, a lot of people are wasting a lot of money. And so not all supplements are the same.

And doTERRA (and we all know this) like, doTERRA’s mission is to be pure. Like, everything is 100 percent pure. So, they have supplements that are also infused with essential oils. Like, it is the perfect combination.

And so, the other thing I love about doTERRA is I don't just have to tell you about their supplements. Like, once you take them, you can feel the difference to them. And I've taken, like I said, I have taken supplements from other companies (I guess other brands), and I never did feel a difference. But I thought what I was doing was—you know—being proactive with my health.

And it turns out a lot of those supplements I was taking did nothing. They had no, had no real significant benefit to my body. And so, with doTERRA, yeah, it's it's a huge difference.

doTERRA: And with that. So, you talked about not being able to feel a difference. What can a multivitamin do for your body? When you find one that is working for you, what is the difference that you see?

Leland: Well, there's a couple of things. Like one, I feel during the day I have an increase in energy. So, I feel like that's there. Like physically, I have that increase, but also like mental capacity. I feel like I have more clarity of thought. Like I don't feel like, I don't know if the word is like fog, but you know sometimes—

doTERRA: Right.

Leland: Sometimes I feel like I have woken up, but I'm still half asleep. And I spend the whole day that way. And then when it's time to go to bed, I'm like wide awake. And so, I feel like a multivitamin is helping me with that. When I'm awake during the day, I don't have that fog in my brain. I have more of the clarity.

And then the other thing that I like about it is I like having an increase in my quality of sleep. So, I like when I go to bed at night, I feel like I'm sleeping better. I like during the day I feel like I'm more awake and more alert and I have more energy. So those are the benefits I enjoy.

doTERRA: Well and those are definitely benefits that I think everyone would like to have in their life, a little bit more energy, a better sleep, just feeling like your body is working the way that it should. I think that's incredible.

Leland: Yeah.

doTERRA: So, Leland, can you walk us through what supplements doTERRA has that you've utilized in your life?

Leland: Oh yeah. It's kind of a long list. I hope that’s OK.

doTERRA: That is perfect.

Leland: So, my wife was the one that introduced me to essential oils. And then after I started using essential oils, I had this belief in doTERRA. And so, when I stumbled upon the Lifelong Vitality, the three different—you know—three different bottles. That's what I started taking.

And so, the three different ones, so that's your Microplex VMz® (so that's your vitamins and minerals) your xEO Mega® (so that's xEO Mega; that's the other one), and then the Alpha CRS®+ (that helps you, like, on a cellular level).

So, those were the three I started taking. And to be honest, I'm not trying to contradict myself, but the first couple days I was taking them, I just kind of felt the same. Like I didn't—like my wife was like really hyping it up, and I was like, “You know, I kind of just feel the same here.”

And it wasn't until I didn't take them for a day is when I felt the big difference. The other time I felt a huge difference is we had gone on a family vacation, and we're at an amusement park. And we're, you know how that is. You're standing in lines. You’re cooking in the sun. You're spending tons of money. Your kids are yelling at you.

doTERRA: Right.

Leland: And I had brought the Lifelong Vitality, but I had forgotten to take them the first two days. And I remember taking it the third day, because we went to this amusement park for four days. So, on the third day, I remember taking it and feeling such a huge difference in those different areas of feeling more clarity and feeling like I had an increase in energy and things like that.

Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex®

So, those were the three that I started taking, and then I was introduced to a couple other ones like—so Deep Blue Rub, the oil, Deep Blue oil is great. The Rub is amazing. I use it probably daily. But then doTERRA came out with a pill form. So, it's the Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex. And just so you know I had to practice that word polyphenol a million times in the mirror. I’m like, “I don't even know if I can read that word, let alone pronounce it.”

doTERRA: Well, it was perfect.

Leland: Yeah, I did great. So that's another one that I use a lot.

DigestZen TerraZyme®

And then like right now, I'm picturing my pill case in the kitchen. So, I use the Lifelong Vitality, Deep Blue—Oh TerraZyme. I use TerraZyme after every meal, usually just one pill.

But if I eat, like—I'm not trying to admit anything here—but like I eat bad. Like, eating five Eggo waffles for breakfast, like, that doesn't even faze me. I'm like, “Yeah. That’s normal”

And my wife is like, “You eat like you're a little kid that like ran away from home.” And so, I do eat a bunch of junk food.

And so, if I eat five Eggo waffles, I happen to—I'll take more TerraZyme than that. I'll take anywhere from one to three TerraZymes. And so, usually if I feel like—oh, I feel like I have that heavy weight in my stomach, like I shouldn't have eaten that many Eggo waffles. That's when I know I should take more than one or two TerraZymes. and so, that's another one I take all the time.

DDR Prime®

Another one I love is DDR Prime, and I don't know if it's my favorite, but it's up there. DDR Prime, they make it in a softgel, and they also have it in the oil. And I know you know that, but I just like to repeat it to myself. But I take that one, and that one I feel amazing with.

Mito2Max®

And then once in a while, I buy the Mito2Max, and I use it. And Mito2Max is really interesting to me. So even though I eat a ton of junk food, and I admit that, I actually don't drink caffeine because caffeine has a weird effect on me. Like, if I drink caffeine—like right now, it's like kind of morning time, you know, early morning—or I'm sorry, late morning. If I drink caffeine, there is a chance I'll be awake until like 3:00, 4:00 in the morning tonight.

doTERRA: Oh no.

Leland: And I think some people would enjoy something like that. But I hate it. I hate it. And the other thing it does to me; it makes me jittery, and it creates all kinds of, like, panic in my mind of like—I'll lay in bed, I'm sorry there's a tangent, but I'll lay in bed and I'll worry about identity theft and, like, housefires. So, I can't. I avoid caffeine as best I can.

So Mito2Max is totally different on my system. So, I don't get jittery. It does not keep me up late at night or anything crazy like that. But it definitely does give me the sense that it's helping sustain my energy level throughout the day, and I do like it for that. So anyways, sorry, that's a long answer. But those are, for the most part, the ones I currently take.

doTERRA: I think that was a great answer. I think it was very comprehensive, which is super helpful. My final question for you, Leland, is what would you say to someone who is maybe teetering on the fence of whether or not to start introducing supplements into their life?

Leland: Oh sure. I mean my quick answer would just be, “Listen, it's got a money back guarantee.” So, I'm talking about the Lifelong Vitality Pack. And then you'll continue to use them.

So, me personally, I want to make sure every month I have Lifelong Vitality and TerraZyme. And then I kind of cycle through different ones. Like right now, I'm doing the dual capsule Turmeric softgel, or I don't know if they’re called softgel. But then I also do like the Deep Blue and the, you know, you name it, and Mito2Max. So, and DDR Prime.

So anyway, yeah, I would highly recommend you just try it. And I think you would have wonderful benefits, and there's no loss of financial to it either.

doTERRA: Well Leland thank you so much for talking with us today for sharing your insight and your advice on supplements. We really appreciate it.

Leland: Well, thank you. Thanks for having me.

To kick us off, Dr. Osguthorpe, can you explain what healthspan is?

Dr. Osguthorpe: Just to be clear, healthspan is not the same thing as lifespan. Lifespan is the number of years we live, whereas healthspan is the number of years we live healthy.

doTERRA: And how is it that people achieve a greater healthspan?

Dr. Osguthorpe: People who optimize their metabolism through daily exercise, diet, relationships, stress management, and of course, smart supplementation, can not only potentially live longer but add life to those years. Here's my dream, my why, my health span. Well into my nineties, I want to be able to spend a day, many days, out fly fishing with my posterity. I'd be able, on any of those days to back my truck down the ramp, unload my drift boat, launch that boat, and then row that boat myself all day long.

Watch my kids and posterity catch boatloads of fish. And then at the end of my life, I'd go home from a day of fishing, enjoyed dinner with my family and peacefully pass away in my sleep. That would be a healthspan that matches or equals my lifespan.

doTERRA: I know you've cited some research in other places about the state of metabolic health and healthspan, but what is the average healthspan that currently exists.

Dr. Osguthorpe: Currently, in North America toward the end of our lifespan, we spend about eight years, sometimes as many as 15 years, dealing with challenges that take away our quality of life and lower our healthspan.

We can't always have a healthspan that lines up perfectly with lifespan, but we can certainly do better.

doTERRA: Now, obviously, we wouldn't be talking about this if there was nothing we could do, if it was all doom and gloom. So, what can we do about our healthspan?

Dr. Osguthorpe: Our lifestyle choices can extend our healthspan, full stop. When we combine a mindful and consistent approach to our diet, movement, stress management, relationships, and smart supplementation. We can maximize all the efforts we make in improving our lifestyle and then reap the benefits for all of our years to come. There are no magic paths to achieve this goal of prolonged healthspan. It will require serious effort by teams of caring and coordinated people.
