Today we're excited to talk to Dr. Russell Osguthorpe, Chief Medical Officer, about the yeast that plays an important role in the new MetaPWR Advantage.

Dr. Osguthorpe, thank you so much for sitting down with us today. We are so excited to talk with you.

Dr. Russell Osguthorpe: It's great to be with you. I'm looking forward to it.

doTERRA: Now, this is a topic that a lot of people have been talking about lately. So, let's jump right in.

Dr. Osguthorpe: All right.

Why Yeast?

doTERRA: Yeast has become a little bit of a hot word for some people; can you tell us about the research and the development behind using yeast in our MetaPWR Advantage?

Dr. Osguthorpe: Absolutely. First thing you need to be aware of is, not all yeasts are the same. Okay? So, yeasts are a whole huge family of microorganism. There are pathogenic yeasts and then there are really helpful yeasts.

For example, without Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we would not exist. It makes the food we eat, bread. The bread that we eat every day comes from yeast. But a specific kind of yeast, a very helpful non-pathogenic yeast that does not make us sick.

There are other yeasts that do make us sick. And you've heard of yeast infections. Those are caused primarily by a species of yeast called Candida. The most common species of which is candida albicans. That is not at all what is in MetaPWR Advantage. MetaPWR Advantage is a product that is created from a yeast extract of Saccharomyces cerevisiae or the helpful, very important yeast that is involved in keeping us all alive.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains the whole biosynthetic pathway that leads to NAD, and we take advantage of that by getting a natural source of NAD and the molecules that lead to NAD from this very helpful non-pathogenic strain of yeast called Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Bread Yeast vs. MetaPWR Yeast

doTERRA: Can you go into a little more detail? Now, I know you mentioned it a little bit. What is the difference between the yeast in MetaPWR and that yeast that you find in that loaf of bread that we eat every day?

Dr. Osguthorpe: Sure. So, the yeast in MetaPWR Advantage and the yeast in a loaf of bread is the same. They are the same species. They're non-pathogenic. They don't cause any human disease. And they really help keep us alive.

The species of yeast in MetaPWR Advantage, we grow in huge containers. We spin it down, separate it from the fluid in which it's growing. That pellet of yeast at the bottom, we then freeze dry, grind up, and put into MetaPWR Advantage. So, in essence, MetaPWR Advantage is a yeast extract, which helps us with our healthspan.

doTERRA: And in connection with that, you know, they are the same yeast. Do people that maybe need to avoid gluten need to avoid MetaPWR Advantage?

Dr. Osguthorpe: Oh, that's an interesting question. No, you don't need to. People who are gluten sensitive do not need to avoid MetaPWR Advantage. Just because the yeast is used to make bread does not mean that any gluten is used in the production of MetaPWR Advantage. There is no wheat, no gluten in MetaPWR Advantage. These yeast are pure in their form and have no contamination with gluten.

Yeast as a Source of NMN

doTERRA: That is always good to know. No one needs to be avoiding this product. And why is it that this yeast is able to provide such a great source of NMN in our MetaPWR Advantage?

Dr. Osguthorpe: That's a good question too. So, the reason why we have seen the results that we have with MetaPWR Advantage is that the yeast extract is non-synthetic. It's a natural form of the molecules of the whole biosynthetic pathway that lead to NAD. NAD being that master molecule that is key to our healthspan.

When we ingest MetaPWR Advantage, that yeast extract from Saccharomyces contains every step along the way leading to NAD including NAD. And that allows us to increase our levels of NAD in our bloodstream and in our bodies when we take MetaPWR Advantage, which leads to increasing our healthspan and helping us live our most vital life.

doTERRA: That is incredible. And we always like to hear that we have those natural sources that we're putting into our body.

Dr. Osguthorpe: Yeah, and to be clear, every molecule means tryptophan, NR, NMN, NAD, NADH, the whole biosynthetic pathways in that yeast extract and it's a natural source, non-synthetic.

doTERRA: Amazing. Now, Dr. Osguthorpe, is there anything else that's specific and unique about our yeast extract?

Dr. Osguthorpe: Well, we've already talked quite a bit about what makes our extract so unique. A couple other things that I think are potentially important for us to recognize. One, the process that we use to create MetaPWR Advantage and the yeast longevity extract is proprietary and specific. The scientific method used is technical and is designed to optimize that biosynthetic pathway so that it is bioavailable to us.

Second, I also think that we need to remember that the way that this yeast extract is created, it kills all of those yeast. Those yeast are freeze dried, ground up, and extracted. And so, there is no possibility of them being a problem for us or causing any difficulty for us because of that fact.

Final Thoughts

doTERRA: Now, Dr. Osguthorpe before we end, if you know, after listening to this, people still have lingering concerns about the yeast in MetaPWR Advantage, what would you tell them?

Dr. Osguthorpe: Well, I think if there are still concerns, I would just focus on the following. Not all yeast are created equally or they're just not the same. There are yeasts that are pathogens and there are yeasts that are non-pathogenic and actually helpful for human beings. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is one of these. It is a non-pathogenic yeast.

It's like a cute cuddly bunny rabbit that gives us all sorts of benefits. It is not a carnivore. The yeast that cause disease, like ,Candida, they are carnivores. They're like tigers and lions and bears. They are scary. They kill things and eat them.

That is not Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is non-pathogenic and safe and is used in all sorts of industries to help us as human beings live vitally and get all the food that we need.

I would hope that people understand the difference between the whole different set of microorganisms that make up yeast. There's non-pathogenic and pathogenic. The yeast that we use in MetaPWR Advantage are both safe and helpful for our healthspan.

doTERRA: Dr. Osguthorpe, it has been fantastic to talk to, you to learn so much more about just the thought and science that goes into this MetaPWR Advantage. Thank you for being here with us.
