Today we're excited to talk to Samantha Werner about non-toxic cooking. Samantha, thank you so much for joining us today.
Samantha Werner: Thank you for inviting me.
How are toxins getting into your food?
doTERRA: This is a topic I am very excited to talk about. I think a lot of people are worried about bringing those toxins into their home and into their families. So, my first question is, what are the common ways that toxins are getting into our food?
Samantha: I believe some of the most common ways that toxins are brought into our home through our food supply is one, preservatives and basically the processing of the foods. Another one is through the herbicides and pesticides that we may find on our fresh produce and also packaging. We're finding out a lot more now how packaging can bring toxins into our food.
How can you avoid toxins at the grocery store?
doTERRA: Absolutely. And that's a lot to keep in mind as we're getting the food and bringing it home. So, what things can we do at the grocery store to reduce the toxins coming into our home, especially when we're on a budget?
Samantha: One of the things that I like to keep in mind when going to the grocery store is to shop the outside circle of the grocery store area. I try to not shop in the center aisles where you're going to find more of your processed and packaged foods. If you're shopping the outside, you're shopping more fresh produce, your meats, your dairy. Also, when looking at your produce, look for things that maybe are organic.
But I know organic can sometimes cost more. So, trying to find foods that just use less pesticides, less herbicides in the whole processing.
doTERRA: Those are fantastic ideas. And like you said, it's just some of those simple changes at the grocery store that we can make to ensure that we are avoiding those things. Now, once we get our food back home and we're looking to start cooking for the week, how is it that I can incorporate essential oils into my cooking routine to help avoid bringing those toxins into my home again?
Samantha: Well, using our essential oils are one, going to help us use more fresh, it sounds crazy to some people we're using an essential oil that comes out of a bottle, but sometimes that's so much safer. And you know what you're getting in that bottle versus buying herbs or even things that are dried herbs in bottles. Many times, we've purchased things in the store, and they are not even what we think we're buying in the instance of cassia versus cinnamon, when you're trying to buy ground cinnamon, most of the time you're buying cassia.
So, using the essential oils just helps us create more of a flavorful food and you can do it from scratch and not have to worry about keeping fresh herbs on hand.
How can you help your body manage its toxic load?
doTERRA: I think that is 100% correct. And that's one of my favorite things about having these essential oils is that you don't have to worry. Oh, do I have peppermint? Do I have cinnamon? You have them in your cabinet. They are potent. They go a really long way, and they are pure, which is such a reassurance, like you said, when you don't always know what you're getting from the grocery store.
Now, obviously we can't be perfect 100% of the time. Toxins are just going to get into our body. What are some of your favorite doTERRA products that you use to help manage your internal toxic load?
Samantha: Well, I personally use TerraZyme, the digestive enzymes at each meal, I suffer from digestive distress after eating. That has helped me quite a bit after eating things that I can't break down myself. Probiotics are really great, the PB Assist, to help create the whole gut biome, create a healthy environment.
If I eat something that does not agree with me, say something that wasn't just right. I always keep Zendocrine on hand or GX Assist because that helps me get through that rough situation and I have really loved taking the new MetaPWR Assist. It also helps in me feeling more comfortable when I eat food. I don't feel heavy, I don't feel bloated and so I have really, really enjoyed adding that to my daily regime when I eat.
doTERRA: I love all of those suggestions and like you said, sometimes it isn't necessarily about what we're eating. Sometimes our body is still going to be a little bit upset. And so having that support for after we eat is wonderful as well. Samantha, it has been amazing to talk to you today to learn more about how we can avoid bringing toxins into our home and how we can help manage our internal toxic load as well. Thank you so much for being here with us.
